Cottages That Sit Empty Eight Months a Year

The wall of glass facing the lake is the reason you bought the place. It is also, from October to May, the least defended part of a building nobody is watching. The serious lock on a cottage door sits beside a pane of glass that a determined person can get through quickly and quietly.

A bonded interior layer does not stop someone deciding to try. It holds the pane together when it is struck, so the glass stays in the frame instead of dropping out of it. A quick entry becomes a slow, loud one, which on an empty lake in November is often the whole decision.

The summer problem is the opposite. West-facing lake walls take direct afternoon sun plus light reflecting off the water, and a Muskoka room glazed on three sides can be unusable by mid afternoon. The usual fix is to cover the view for the hours you most want it.

Worth knowing: daytime privacy works on a light difference. After dark with your lights on, the effect reverses. A premium privacy grade with a darker, more reflective exterior is also available.

An 8-mil high-tensile layer bonded to the inside of the glass. When the pane is struck it breaks but stays together in the frame, so a quick smash-and-grab becomes a slow, loud job.

Worth knowing: clear mode is very clear but not quite bare glass, with a light haze under 4%. It also needs a power route to the glass, which we plan before quoting.

Installation

Our own two-person crew, planned as one trip. A lake wall and doors is usually a long day and a whole cottage two to three. Coverings fully cure within 30 days.

Starting at about $1,500

Muskoka projects start at about $1,500. That is not a price per window. It is the point where a day with a two-person crew works for both of us. Most finished work lands between $20 and $29 per square foot of glass, installed, with HST included. The extra over our Simcoe County minimum is the drive, and the work is planned to finish in one trip. Travel is built into the quote, not added at the end.

Muskoka Questions We Get Asked

How much heat does solar control actually block?

Our house grade rejects 33% of solar heat and our premium grade rejects 51%, and both block 99% or more of UV. Those are the product ratings. What you get on your own windows depends on the glass, any Low-E coating and which way it faces, which is why we identify the glass before we quote.

Will security reinforcement stop a break-in?

It will not make glass unbreakable, and it is not a replacement for an alarm. What the 8-mil layer does is hold the glass together in the frame when it is struck, so getting through takes longer and makes a lot more noise. It works alongside your alarm and never needs to be armed.

Do you install name-brand products?

We quote by grade and measured performance rather than by brand name. Every quote states the solar heat rejected, visible light and UV figures for the exact grade you are buying, so you can compare us line by line with anyone. Every covering carries a manufacturer warranty against bubbling, peeling, cracking and delamination, and we guarantee our workmanship for twelve months.

How long does a Muskoka cottage job take?

We plan Muskoka work to finish in one trip. A lake-facing wall plus the ground floor doors is usually a single long day. A whole cottage with security reinforcement and solar control runs two to three working days with our two-person crew, so the measure-up is thorough.

Do you work on my existing glass?

Yes. Nothing is removed and nothing is ordered in. The covering is applied to the surface of the glass already in your frames, usually the interior. Edges are left unsealed so the sealed unit can still breathe and your existing glass warranty stays intact.

What if my windows have Low-E glass?

Newer Muskoka construction and renovated boathouses are almost entirely Low-E, and it changes how the glass handles heat. Some coverings are rated for Low-E and some are not. We identify your exact glass at the site assessment and only quote what is safe to put on it.

Is switchable smart glass quoted differently?

Yes. Smart glass needs a low-voltage transformer and a power route to the glass, so it is quoted once we know the wiring path. Send us the glass sizes and a photo of the nearest outlet or power source and we will come back with written options.

How far into Muskoka do you go, and is there a travel charge?

Gravenhurst is about an hour and a quarter from us and Huntsville closer to two hours. We cover the whole district, including Port Carling, Bala, Rosseau and Dorset. Travel is built into the quote rather than added at the end, which is part of why the Muskoka minimum sits higher than our Simcoe County one.

Can you install once the cottage is closed for the season?

Only if the heat is on. Coverings need the glass surface above roughly five degrees to bond and a stretch of moderate temperature to cure. If your place is winterised and heated we can work through the season. If it is drained and shut, we book you for spring opening instead.

Is there a minimum job size in Muskoka?

Cottage projects start at $1,500. The extra over our Simcoe County minimum is the drive and the fact that the work is planned to finish in one trip. If your job is smaller than that, we will say so on the phone.

When should I book to be finished before closing up?

Call in August. September and early October fill first, because most owners want the work done before Thanksgiving. Booking in August gets you a date before you drain the lines rather than after.
