Old Glass Is Not Bad Glass

Orillia has an older building stock than most of the places we work, and that shapes the job.

Mississaga Street is lined with nineteenth century commercial frontages carrying big display glass that was never specified to do anything except let light in and show the goods. It does that well. It also heats the front of every shop from May onward and fades whatever sits in the window.

The north ward and the streets around the old hospital are full of houses with original or early replacement glazing, and their owners are generally not looking to rip it out. Old glass in sound condition is worth keeping, and it is simpler to work with than new glass because there is no Low-E coating to account for.

West Ridge and the newer pockets off Coldwater Road were built recently, with modern sealed units and much larger openings. Those need a compatibility check first and often a different product.

Many professional practices here work out of converted houses along West Street and Coldwater Road, with treatment rooms and offices behind residential windows close to a public sidewalk. Those rooms need daytime privacy without going dark.

Worth knowing: daytime privacy works on a light difference. After dark with your lights on, the effect reverses. A premium privacy grade with a darker, more reflective exterior is also available.

How Your Orillia Project Runs

    Tell us the room, the problem and roughly how much glass. If the job is under our minimum, we say so on the phone.

  2. Site Assessment

    We measure, identify your glass including any Low-E coating, and confirm which products are safe to put on it.

  3. Written Fixed Quote

    One all-in price with materials, labour and HST. Nothing is added at completion. A 50% deposit books the date.

  4. Installation

    Our own two-person crew. Most Orillia homes take one day and a whole home two to three. Coverings fully cure within 30 days.

Our house grade rejects 33% of solar heat and our premium grade rejects 51%, and both block 99% or more of UV. Those are the product ratings. What you get on your own windows depends on the glass, any Low-E coating and which way it faces, which is why we identify the glass before we quote.

It will not make glass unbreakable, and it is not a replacement for an alarm. What the 8-mil layer does is hold the glass together in the frame when it is struck, so getting through takes longer and makes a lot more noise. It works alongside your alarm and never needs to be armed.

We quote by grade and measured performance rather than by brand name. Every quote states the solar heat rejected, visible light and UV figures for the exact grade you are buying, so you can compare us line by line with anyone. Every covering carries a manufacturer warranty against bubbling, peeling, cracking and delamination, and we guarantee our workmanship for twelve months.

A downtown storefront is usually a single day, and we start early so you can open on time. A house is a day for the sun-facing rooms, or two to three working days for the whole place. You get the schedule before the deposit.

The newer housing in West Ridge is almost all Low-E, while older homes in the north ward usually are not. Some coverings are rated for Low-E and some are not. We identify your exact glass at the site assessment and only quote what is safe to put on it.

Yes. Smart glass needs a low-voltage transformer and a power route to the glass, so it is quoted once we know the wiring path. Send us the glass sizes and a photo of the nearest outlet or power source and we will come back with written options.

Usually yes, and older glass is often simpler to work with than new. Single pane and older double glazing have no Low-E coating to account for. What we check is the condition of the pane itself, because we will not bond a covering to glass with an existing crack or a failed seal. That assessment happens before we quote.
