The panes in your walls are not all the same. What they are made of decides which coverings are safe, which are smart, and which we will refuse to install.
Most buildings mix several of these. Knowing which is which explains a lot about what your glass can and cannot do.

Heat-treated for roughly four times the strength of annealed. Breaks into small blunt pebbles instead of shards. Required by code in doors, showers and glass near floors.
Two panes bonded to a plastic interlayer, the same construction as a windshield. When it breaks, it stays in one piece. Common in overhead glass and railings.
Two panes sealed around an insulating air or gas gap. Most modern windows are insulated glass units. The sealed unit is why covering choice matters: trap too much heat and the seal or the glass can fail.
Glass with an invisible metallic coating that manages heat. Excellent at its job, but it changes how the pane absorbs energy, so the covering has to be matched to it. Some products are built for Low-E, some are not.
A covering changes how a pane absorbs solar energy. Put a heat-absorbing product on the wrong glass and the pane heats unevenly, which builds stress at the edges. In the worst case that means thermal breakage: a spontaneous crack that starts at the frame and wanders across your window. On sealed double-pane units it can also mean a failed seal and permanent fog between the panes.
This is why the first thing we do at any quote is identify your exact glass: type, thickness, coating and whether it is a sealed unit. Then we only install products rated safe for that combination. It is also why we ask about your window warranty. Some manufacturers have conditions about surface treatments, and you deserve to know exactly where you stand before anything touches your glass.
Our rule: if a product is not rated for your glass, we do not install it. No exceptions, even if it costs us the job. A cracked pane or a fogged unit is not a risk worth your money.
