How Switchable Glass Works

Frosted one second, clear the next. No blinds, no curtains, no waiting. Here is what is actually happening inside the glass.

Liquid Crystal, Two States

PDLC stands for polymer dispersed liquid crystal. A layer thinner than a credit card holds millions of microscopic liquid crystal droplets suspended in polymer. With the power off, the droplets sit in random directions and scatter light, so the glass reads as frosted. Apply a small current and the droplets snap into alignment, light passes straight through, and the glass goes clear.

There is no in-between and no waiting. The change is instant, silent and repeatable tens of thousands of times. The panel beside this text cycles exactly the way real PDLC behaves: a hard snap between states, never a slow fade.

What It Needs to Run

Low-Voltage Power

PDLC runs on low voltage through a small transformer. Where code calls for a licensed electrician, we bring one in and build it into the quote.

Any Control You Like

Wall switch, remote, phone app or your existing smart home system. Most clients run it from more than one.

Your Existing Glass

The covering retrofits onto the panes already in your walls. No glass replacement, no construction, and most installs finish in a day.

One thing to know: frosted mode is private, not blackout. Light still passes through, which is why a frosted PDLC pane keeps a room bright while hiding everything behind it. It also means shapes pressed directly against the glass can read as silhouettes. We walk through exactly what it looks like before you commit.

Where Switchable Earns Its Keep

Anywhere you want both the view and the option to take it away. These are the installs we see most.

Bedrooms & Baths

Full privacy the instant you want it, full light the instant you do not. Glass shower walls and ensuite partitions are the classic case.

Boardrooms & Clinics

Meeting rooms, consult rooms and treatment spaces that switch private mid-conversation, then open back up between appointments.

Media & Presentation

In frosted mode the glass doubles as a projection surface. One pane serves as window, privacy wall and screen.

Watch It Switch in Person

Video never does it justice. Book a consultation and we will demonstrate a live panel so you can flip it yourself.
